JOB DESCRIPTION
COSTUME DESIGNER’S RESPONSIBILITIES: The Costume Designer shall be responsible to CTOC for the design, creation, and management of all costumes for a given production. Such responsibilities shall include, but are not limited to, the following activities:
- Participate in regular production meetings prior to auditions attended by the Director, Stage Manager, Assistant Director, Musical Director (for musical productions), Set Designer/Set Technicians, Costume Designer, Prop Master, and CTOC’s General Manager.
- Within thirty (30) days of receiving the script and no later than three (3) days after the first production meeting, notify CTOC’s designated contact of any additional costume requirements not already addressed.
- Determine the specific costume needs as outlined in the script and work with the Director to create a costume plot/spreadsheet appropriate for the production.
- Provide a listing of any individuals or entities who should be acknowledged in the show program to CTOC’s General Manager.
- Supervise Costume Crew volunteers in measuring, fitting, altering, and fabricating costumes.
- Ensure that cast members are measured and documented respectfully, with boys and girls measured separately.
- Ensure all necessary costumes are completed prior to the first dress rehearsal, with the majority completed by the beginning of tech week.
- Ensure costumes are stored safely at night as needed.
- Attend all dress rehearsals and be available to make repairs or changes to costumes as needed during rehearsal week.
- Work within the allotted budget and make purchases necessary to complete the costume plot. All receipts must be provided to the CTOC Treasurer.
- Ensure all costumes are removed from the performance venue at the end of the final performance and that, within two (2) weeks after the last performance and strike, all costumes are returned to the CTOC workshop, properly cleaned, and organized in the costume area.
- Return any rented or borrowed costume pieces to their rightful owners.
- Advise the Stage Manager of any costume-related or technical needs during rehearsals and performances.
- If an Apprentice Costume Designer is identified, work with the Beyond the Stage CTOC Board Advisor to create a tentative schedule and position summary consistent with CTOC policies.
